Photo of the Day - Thursday 8 April 2010 Steve Thomson Steve sent us this frame from a fabulous timelapse sequence that he shot between 20:00 on 6 April and 00:00 on 7 April 2010. He wrote 'It shows the Aurora Australis and the Milky Way creating a spectacular display over Lake Dunstan, the Dunstan Range and the Central Otago township of Cromwell. I'm no astronomer but am told this is a very rare phenomenon to witness in New Zealand and has something to do with 'Solar Wind'. This is the second night in a row that there has been this type of activity in the Southern skies. Click here to see Steve's timelapse sequence on YouTube. Light winds and patchy skies when I arrived. Spotted this beauty. Lenticular I think (my dad's the cloud man, not me)' wrote Christopher. New Zealand's mountains and the often strong nor'westerly winds ensure that this country is one of the best places in the world for viewing lenticular clouds. It didn't last very long so by the time I got my camera out to try and photograph the lightning the storm was about over. Did manage to get this photo of a rainbow, Sony a900 and 20mm lens at 19:21 on 24 March 2010. Photo of the Day - Saturday 3 April 2010 Luke Blackbeard 'Hi James, thought I would send in this photo of a Nor'West front that followed us out the West Matukituki valley at 16:10 on the 28 February 2010. The camera is pointing North West, back toward Aspiring Hut. This photograph is a HDR image of three shots at f11 and 1/200th with 2 stop auto bracketing. Canon 500D 18-200mm lens. Normally we prefer unmanipulated photographs however this photograph shows how High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging can be used very successfully to improve contrast across the full brightness range. This technique is particularly useful for photographs containing bright clouds and dark foregrounds. However because there is a need to bracket exposures it doesn't work so well if there is a lot of movement in the clouds. Luke's photograph is a beautiful example of HDR imaging - it retains some very subtle detail in the brighter clouds as well as the dark foreground. Most of the photographs that we publish are from New Zealand, however we are happy to consider interesting photographs of weather phenomena from any part of the world.
